Update on the Guide to the Value Methodology Body of Knowledge

I am pleased to announce that we have all but finished the writing, editing, and graphic design of the Guide to the Value Methodology Body of Knowledge! There were a few bumps along the way, but we are now in the final stages of the process and should be moving toward publication in multiple formats very soon. Some of the key highlights are below:

  • The title of the publication had to be changed somewhat. The original idea was to publish this book under the title “VMBoK” Guide. During the process of applying for a registered trademark with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, our application was challenged by the Project Management Institute (PMI). PMI felt that the term “VMBoK” was too similar to “PMBoK” which also makes mention of “Value Engineering”. As a result, we decided to modify our trademark application to “VM Guide”. The new application is in the works and we do not anticipate any further issues.
  • We are anticipating using print on demand for the paperback format and will be working on potentially a PDF and/or e-Book approach for the digital format. The format will be standard 8.5 x 11 format to allow sufficient room to accommodate large graphics such as FAST diagrams. In this regard, it will be similar to the existing Function Analysis Guide. It is approximately 161 pages and has been professionally typeset and graphically designed.
  • Due to the ongoing situation related to the pandemic, we are not sure when the VM Guide will be available for distribution. The hope is that the digital format  can still coincide with the virtual Value Summit in June.

I would like to thank everyone that was involved in the development of the VM Guide. We had excellent engagement from membership and the Technical Committee showed their dedication and professionalism in meeting deadlines and incorporating member feedback.

I hope to share more at the virtual Value Summit this June.
