SAVE Certification Board & the Virtual World

By Bob Rude, PE, CVS-Life – Chairman, SAVE International Certification Board

From the SAVE International Certification Board (CB) perspective, the virtual world is a game changer. The CB started addressing these issues over four years ago when we started receiving CVS papers featuring the accomplishments of virtual workshops. Prior to the current COVID-19 outbreak, the requirements for certification were all to be conducted in person. Now we are faced with a need to change.

To this end, the CB has identified the following key portions of the certification process affected by the introduction of a virtual format:

  • Participation in a virtual workshop will qualify for the value studies required between taking the VMF 1 and VMF 2 courses.
  • CVS candidates required to facilitate the three phases of the job plan (Function Analysis, Creativity and Evaluation) must continue to do so in person with a value team. Virtual facilitation of these phases will not be accepted.
  • At this time the teaching of the VMF 2 course using virtual formats is not permitted.

In addition, an email was sent to all approved VMF 1 course instructors informing them that they may be allowed to teach the course virtually starting July 1, 2020 through September 1, 2020. This will only happen if the pilot virtual VMF 1 course SAVE is holding during the Virtual Value Summit this June is successful. If it is, then instructors must submit the required documentation (agendas and lesson plans) prior to their course so their approach can be reviewed by the SAVE Board of Directors.

In mid-March, SAVE identified generic protocols that will help in the development of more detailed scopes of work, protocols and delivery of virtual workshops. Click here to view the protocols.

Change is what our profession is all about. The CB will be monitoring the use of virtual formats very carefully and, regardless of direction and outcome, today’s events will change how we implement our professional training which is a part of the certification process. In the end, the CB objective remains “quality” not quantity of value professionals.
