President’s Message – March 2018

By Katherine Bethany – President, SAVE International

Spring in North America is just around the corner. As I write this, early spring flowers and trees are blooming around my home. So take heart, those of you who live further north – winter is almost over.

You might ask why I am mentioning the weather; well I went to Phoenix, AZ during the last weekend of February to attend the Miles Value Foundation (MVF) Board of Directors meeting. What was strange is arriving in Phoenix to temperatures that were 20 degrees colder than they were at home in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina. For those of you who know North America, you know this is extremely rare – having the normally hottest area in the United States be significant cooler than anywhere else in the United States doesn’t happen often.

The odd weather brings to mind that change (my theme it seems for these articles) occurs all around us on a daily basis. But what sometimes seems like well-planned, needed and routine changes do not always go smoothly. It is up to those in the middle of the change to smooth it out or stir it up, depending on the situation. (Much like spring weather – beautiful flowers and destructive weather are all harbingers of the change from winter to summer.)

So what changes is SAVE International working through? I know most of you are well aware that we are working through changes to the Certification Program. In addition, we are trying to clarify, and yes, change a bit, the roles and responsibilities of the various SAVE entities (the SAVE Board of Directors, Certification Board, etc.). It is not an easy task – full of bumps and things that require rethinking or tweaks to roll outs of the changes. So please bear with your volunteers and the SAVE Business Office as we continue to push these important changes through the process. We will continue to keep you informed of the changes, status of implementation and reasons for the changes on the website, in Value World and at the upcoming annual business meeting during the 2018 Value Summit.

As for the MVF meeting – it was very informative, and I enjoyed getting to see our Foundation at work doing their best to meet their goal of providing Universities and Colleges the materials and resources to teach Value Management. It became apparent to me during this meeting how much overlap there is between the MVF work and the work of the SAVE Certification Board and the SAVE VP – Education. It is a challenge to make sure all entities are moving in the same direction and not at cross purposes. However, given the quality, dedication and desire to make SAVE better that all of the volunteer Directors on each of these Boards possesses, I know it is a challenge we can overcome. We will make SAVE operate much more effectively, and be more relevant and ready to meet our current and future goals, mission and plans.

Please join me in thanking each of the volunteers of SAVE International for their outstanding commitment, passion and dedication!
